Meet our 2024-2025 Mentors!



Yu Bai is in her third year as a mentor in the Maryland TESOL Mentorship Program. She is also currently the co-editor of MDTESOL Quarterly publication. She has been an ESL teacher for 17 years and is currently a faculty member in the ESL Department at Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA). She teaches ESL reading and writing and college composition in various formats: in-person, hybrid, and online. She has also received credentials in instructional design and computer science. 


Darcy Scott is in her third year as a mentor in the Maryland TESOL Mentorship Program. She is an ESOL Teacher & Co-Chair of the ELD department at Rosa Parks Elementary School. She has been an elementary ESOL teacher in Prince George’s County for the past 15 years, teaching 1st through 5th grade English learners. She also teaches adult ESL, and is lead teacher for Prince George's Community College. She is a National Board certified teacher of English as a New Language.

Zahava Johnson is in her second year as a mentor in MDTESOL's Mentorship Program. She is the current Chair for Maryland TESOL's Secondary Education Interest Section. She has earned a B.A. in Political Science from Hampton University, a M.S. in Education from Fordham University and a TESOL Certificate from the University of Maryland. She has spent over 20 years of her teaching experience in Prince George’s County, Md and has recently transitioned to William Wirt Middle School. She now serves as the English Language Development (ELD) Department Co-Chair and enjoys teaching AVID and ESL to middle school students from a variety of backgrounds. She has recently maintained her National Board Certification and continues to serve as a Professional Learning Facilitator mentoring National Board Certification candidates.


Ahu Moser is in her second year as a mentor in the MDTESOL Mentorship Program. She is an Adult Education Program Specialist with 25 years of teaching experience in ESL and EFL settings nationwide and overseas. Her focus includes English Language Learners and Quality Professional Development. Ahu is a regular presenter at local and national conferences, advocating for innovative instructional practices and support for Multilingual Learners. She was the chair/and past chair of Awards Professional Council with TESOL International. She holds a Master of Education in Educational Management and earned the TESOL International ELT Management Certificate in 2018. Currently, she is pursuing a Doctorate in Education in Curriculum and Instruction.

Elizabeth Wagenheim is new to the MD TESOL mentor program but not to MD TESOL. She served on the board for several years and as president in 2001. Today she is on faculty at Maryland Institute College of Art where she works with multilingual students.  She teaches content-based ELL, literature, and intercultural communications.  Her teaching career has included community college, adult education, and teacher training at home and overseas.  Elizabeth is a certified mediator and is passionate about bringing conflict resolution into her work in education. 

Carrie Conley has spent the last 25 years in Montgomery County, Md where she has served as an ESOL teacher, instructional specialist, academic achievement specialist, and administrator.  She now serves as the EML and Science Coach in an elementary school dual language program.  This year, she is also co-teaching language through Science and Literacy in grades 2-4.  She has taught ESL in community colleges and adult education programs and EFL overseas.  She is new to the MD TESOL mentor program.
