MARYLAND TESOL SCHOLARSHIP

Maryland TESOL offers an annual scholarship to two deserving individuals, a graduating senior who is or was an English learner in the past 3 years, and an adult learner of English (current or former). This scholarship supports their journey to strengthen English skills and pursue higher education at an accredited institution.

Application Deadline: April 1st of each year.

Awardees are announced during our Annual Membership Meeting and Spring Dinner each May.

SUBMIT APPLICATION

TO APPLY FOR THE HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP, YOU MUST...

  • Currently attend a Maryland high school.
  • Be on track to graduate within the same school year as the application.
  • Be under 22 years old.
  • Be in an ESOL/EL program or have exited within the past three years.
  • Have a minimum GPA of 2.5.
  • Plan to enroll at a two or four year degree-program in a higher education institution in Maryland by the following Fall semester.

TO APPLY FOR THE ADULT SCHOLARSHIP, YOU MUST...

  • Be over 21 years old.
  • Be a current or former English learner.
  • Currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program at a two or four year higher education institution in Maryland.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS (MUST BE UPLOADED WHEN SUBMITTING APPLICATION)

  • Current transcript (if currently enrolled in high school or college).
  • Personal essay.
  • Current resume or a list of extracurricular activities.
  • Names and email addresses of two people who will provide letters of recommendation (References will be contacted via email separately).

PERSONAL ESSAY CRITERIA

Choose ONE of the topics below to write your personal essay. It should be between 250-500 words. You will be asked to upload your personal essay when submitting the application form.

  1. Describe how you overcame an obstacle, challenge, or failure and how that experience shaped you.

  2. Describe an accomplishment, big or small, and how that has influenced how you see yourself or the world.

  3. Describe your goal(s) for the future and how your continued education aligns with this.
