Maryland TESOL Scholarship

Maryland TESOL will award an annual scholarship award for 2 eligible recipients who are or will be pursuing a degree at an accredited institution: a graduating senior who is a current EL or who exited in the past 3 years, and an adult learner of English (currently or formerly). The scholarship will help awardees to develop more English language skills in pursuit of higher education.

Application deadline is April 1st of each year, and the awardees are announced during our Annual Membership Meeting and Spring Dinner in May.

To apply for the high school scholarship, you must:

  • currently attend a Maryland high school 
  • be on track to graduate within the same school year as the application
  • be under 22 years old 
  • be in an ESOL/EL program or have exited within the past 3 years 
  • have a minimum GPA of 2.5 
  • plan to enroll at a two or four year degree-program in a higher education institution in Maryland by the following Fall semester

To apply for the adult scholarship, you must:

  • be over 21 years old 
  • be a current or former English learner 
  • currently enrolled in a two or four year higher education institution in Maryland seeking a degree

Required documents to upload during application:

  • Current transcript (if currently enrolled in high school or college)
  • Personal Essay (see the details below)
  • Current resume or a list of extracurricular activities
  • Names and email addresses of 2 people who will provide letters of recommendation (they will be contacted via email separately)

Details of the Personal Essay:

Choose ONE of the topics below to write your personal essay. It should be between 250-500 words. You will be asked to upload your personal essay via the application form.

  1. Describe how you overcame an obstacle, challenge, or failure and how that experience shaped you.

  2. Describe an accomplishment, big or small, and how that has influenced how you see yourself or the world.

  3. Describe your goal(s) for the future and how your continued education aligns with this.
